In Mohalla Ghoshiyan, just before a wedding on Wednesday afternoon, five young men, including the groom’s brother-in-law, maternal, and paternal cousins, went for a swim at the Ganga Canal near Daurala Bridge after having lunch. While they were holding hands, a sudden strong current caused the groom’s cousins to lose their grip, leading to their drowning. Family members and local divers searched for several hours, but without success. Consequently, the wedding festivities were disrupted.
The wedding was for Rashid, son of Noor Muhammad, scheduled for the evening in Meerut’s Machheran Bhusamandi area. With two more weddings planned, the household was filled with guests. After lunch, Rashid’s cousin, 26-year-old Saavez, along with his brother-in-law Sameer, 16-year-old Faizan, and two others, went to the canal. Unfortunately, due to the strong current, Saavez and Faizan drowned, prompting others to raise an alarm, which attracted a crowd.
Family members rushed to the scene to search for the missing young men, joined by local divers, but to no avail. On Thursday, a team of divers from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) launched a search operation but still found no leads. Officer Pratap Singh confirmed that the search continues in the canal.
